Is it better to take Lantus®, in the morning or in the evening?

When to Take Lantus® (Glargine)

First I recommend that you discuss this with your healthcare team.

Although it is not supposed to matter when you take Lantus, it is most often given at bedtime for the following reasons:

  • Most people have a dawn phenomenon so if you took Lantus each morning, it would be at the end of its action the next morning, when you might still need the steady supply of Lantus to suppress the dawn phenomenon. So in this case, taking it at bed would be more desirable.
  • As stated in an article from Diabetes Health, since Lantus can have a slight peak 12-14 hours after injection, that fact should be taken into account.

There are some people who take their Lantus at dinnertime; and there are some who split their Lantus dose: they require a small dose of Lantus in the morning, along with the main dose at bedtime. But these examples do not represent the most common regimen.

As with any insulin regimen, individual needs vary so you need to discuss this with your healthcare team. With trial and error, careful testing, and your healthcare team's guidance, you should be able to find which way works best for you.
